"Always in Mission": A newly printed history of the Province of St. Nicholas was presented within this year of its 4th Centenary (1621-2021).
On the 13th of November, the feast of all the Saints of the Augustinian Family, the Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentine of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, made a public presentation of the book Always in Mission. The History of the Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentine of the Order of the Augustinian Recollects, a publication that starts with why this Province was founded and ends with a glimpse of its present.
This book is one of the principal fruits of this past years' commemoration of the Province's 400th anniversary. Its pages include a general description of the events in the history of the Province of St. Augustine that merged with the Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentine in 2018.
The book was presented in Madrid (Spain) in St. Rita's parish hall. Most of the writers were present and were represented by the committees' presidents: Rafael Mediavilla (Fourth Centenary Committee), Marciano Santervas (Communications and Publications), and Sergio Sanchez, Provincial.
The book was not made as a strictly historical essay but made it enjoyable and easy read to everyone. It offers a section that explains the history of the Province. Another complementary section explains and humanizes certain events in our history. A third and final section is dedicated to images such as photos, paintings, charts, QR codes, etc.
An individual chapter is dedicated to each century since the 16th, except for the 20th century, which took two chapters due to the complexity in events and geographic expansion of the Province during that time.
Over different colored backgrounds, we can read 37 biographies bringing brother friars up close and personal to the reader. There is information regarding communities, ministries, types of pastoral work done in each area, missions, social projects, special services, and a presentation of various members of the Augustinian Recollect Family. The orange backdrop was chosen to present photos of buildings, different objects, artwork, etc.
Almost 300 images are presented in this book: 61 photographs dating before 1950 and 142 from after 1950; 50 paintings; 17 charts and graphs; and 7 QR codes that link you to video information on the web. In the end, you will see a glossary, indexes, names of people, cities, and institutions, and some prayers and hymns.
Sergio Sanchez, Father Provincial, wrote the epilogue. He invites us to approach this book giving thanks for all we have in the present and being encouraged by our history to live the values of the Kingdom Always in Mission with hope towards the future.
