"The days of my life" is an autobiography which has just seen the light of day relating the life experiences and vocation of David Arias (born in Mataluenga, Leon, Spain in 1929). He is the emeritus auxiliary Bishop of Newark and has a large pastoral trajectory, particularly amongst the Latin population of the United States.
Between October and December 2017 various digital publications by the Augustinian Recollect Bishop David Arias have been published. The last of them has been the English (The days of my life) and Spanish (Los días de mi vida) versions of the autobiography of this Recollect who has given practically the whole of his life to the people of the United States. In the presentation of the book, Arias described some of the aspects of this publication:

“In February 2015 I was in Rome because of the naming of the Bishop of David (Panama), the Augustinian Recollect Jose Luis Lacunza, as Cardinal of the Church. The Father General of the Order of the Augustinian Recollects had brought together the Bishops and Prior Provincials of the Order for this very reason.

During my stay, the Historian of the Order, Angel Martinez Cuesta, suggested to me that it was the right moment for my autobiography. I thought about it, and considering that I was no longer as young as I was, I decided to follow his advice and write something about my life until the present day.

(…) I have followed a chronological structure in order to highlight the actions, activities and most relevant experiences of each of the places where I have lived. It is possible that some of the names or dates are not going to be completely correct, given that I haven´t kept diaries or registers before my episcopal ordination and my memory could have failed me. I have accompanied these pages with some photos which I did keep from all these years.

My intention has not been describe everything in detail with all that happened, but rather to give a general idea of the meaning of each of these life-forming experiences.

The index of the book is, in fact, an authentic geographical journey of the life of Arias, given that he dedicates, more or less, chapters and parts to each of the geographical parts of his life in a chronological way: Leon, San Sebastian and Granada (Spain); Mexico City (Mexico); Rome (Italy); Texas, Kansas, California, New York and New Jersey (United States).

The objective of all this, Arias indicates, is “to present a general image of me, my vocation, my work and my passing through this world; I wanted all of this to express what God has wished to carry out through the graces and gifts that me has given”.

Other works by Arias available in digital versions since the latter part of 2017 are The Martyrs of the United States (161 pp.), The First Catholics of the United States (273 pp.), or Spanish American Headlines (309 pp.). In them he addresses important aspects of the history of the Catholic Church in The United States, of the missionaries that implanted the Catholic faith in those lands or that of the Hispanic reality of the United States and the importance of Hispanic culture in the roots of American society.
