Following the meeting held in West Orange (New Jersey, USA), with the attendance of the prior general of the Order of Augustinian Recollects and the priors provincial of the provinces of St Nicholas of Tolentino and St Augustine, the religious of both provinces have received an official message with updated news about the road-map for the merger.
On 26th April, feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Miguel Miro, prior general of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, Sergio Sanchez, prior provincial of the province of St Nicholas of Tolentino and John Michael Rafferty, prior provincial of the province of St Augustine, issued their first joint official message.

The official letter dealt with the meeting organised by the Commission for the Merger of Provinces, in West Orange (New Jersey, USA) on the 25th and 26th April, which has taken several further steps along the merger process which will come to its crowning moment with the Provincial Chapter of the Province of St Nicholas of Tolentino in May 2018.

The members of the Commission for the Merger of Provinces has reminded the religious of both provinces that they are “privileged participants in this historic moment through which the Order is living”. With this end in view, they called for openness, and in particular for a “communion of hearts, a communion that is fraternal, spiritual, and apostolic”.

At the same time, the Commission asks all the religious to strengthen both their listening and their dialogue, to be discerning regarding their actions and missions over and above any self-regard, relativism, easy-living, or discouragement. They should encourage missionary endeavours and co-operate in solving “the problems of our days”.

All the religious are also reminded that the merger “is not improvised nor does it come about spontaneously; it is the goal of a long path of commitment”. The background to this merger is spoken of in terms of a “beautiful history”, “values” and “healthy traditions”, the riches of “multicultural reality”, amongst other things.

There is also encouragement to strengthen “communication, the safeguarding of the fraternal life, the promotion of communities that are more evangelizing, the encouragement of vocational work, the opening out to other countries, a greater austerity, and a sense of belonging”.

The Commission`s Decisions

Following on from this message to sensitize and encourage all the religious, the Commission for the Merger of Provinces has reported on various decisions that were taken. Amongst these is the proposal that, once the merger has been formalized, a new Vicariate of the United States should be formed within the Province of St Nicholas of Tolentino, made up of all the communities established in the US states of California, New Mexico, Texas, New Jersey, and New York. At the same time, the present community of the Province of St Augustine in Mexico City will become a part of the Vicariate of Mexico and Costa Rica.

Likewise, working groups have already been set up focussed on vocations, initial formation, spirituality and ongoing formation, the apostolate, communications, and assets.

Future meetings of the Commission for the Merger of Provinces have been set for the 5th and 6th September in West Orange (NJ); 24th and 25th November in Madrid; and 19th January 2018, once again in Oxnard. Then from 16th to 18th January 2018, an assembly of the Augustinian Recollects living in the United States will be held in Oxnard (California).

In addition, as steps towards the merger, on 15th November there will come the official announcement of the election of the prior provincial of the province arising from the merger; on 1st December the joint report of both priors provincial concerning the state of each of the provinces will be issued to the religious, and on 15th May 2018 the Provincial Chapter will begin in Marcilla (Navarra, Spain).

At the same time, the Commission invites the religious from now on to take part jointly in spiritual exercises, formation weeks, inter-community retreats, fraternal visits, and everything that goes towards facilitating mutual awareness, integration and the practical and affective unity of the religious, communities, Secular Fraternities, ministries, and more…
