The brazilian Labrea mission, in Sao Paulo
During the month of October, the Recollect communities in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo have had their missionary awareness raised by Joseph Shonibare, a missionary religious from the community of PauinÃ, in the Prelature of Lábrea (Amazonas, Brazil). This missionary visit during the month of the missions has now become a regular fixture.
Co-operation between the Augustinian Recollect communities of the provinces of Santa Rita and St Thomas of Villanova in the central and southern states of Brazil (Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Paraná) is a regular event, and for some years has meant that an Augustinian Recollect religious from the Prelature of Lábrea (Amazonas, Brazil) has undertaken missionary promotion in the various communities and ministries. In addition, these communities in the centre and south of the country can serve as places for rest and for sharing our lives, escaping from the traditional geographic isolation of the Amazon region.
Joseph Shonibare, an Augustinian Recollect from the community of Pauiní (Amazonas, Brazil), has been welcomed to the Augustinian Recollect communities of the Province of St. Rita in the state of Sao Paulo, as part of this year`s month of the missions.
The parish of St Rita of Cascia in Igarapava and the parish of Our Lady of Aparecida in the city of Franca – also known as la capillita
(the little chapel)- were the first to receive the Recollect missionary.
In the second of these places, Shonibare was able to join in with some of the activities programmed for the patronal celebrations (FESTAP 2016) as well as talking with the young men in the Franca postulancy. This takes in Brazilians from the provinces of St Rita and St Nicholas of Tolentino who are exploring their vocations.
October he visited the St Monica Theologate, which also includes the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, in the Vila Hamburguesa district of the capital of Sao Paulo state.
He took the opportunity of taking part in special Eucharists for the missions and for vocations, as well as meeting the parish community for a talk setting out the reality, the urgency, and the situation of the Amazon mission.
The Recollects in Sao Paulo said: “Joseph`s testimony really got to our hearts, and has lead us to pray even more for those who dedicate themselves to preaching the Gospel in places where the lack of resources is so great. We pray for him and for so many of our brothers who serve today in the Prelature of Labrea”.
Joseph also had the chance to get to know the interior of Sao Paulo state for the first time, as well as visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, the patroness of the country, and pray at this centre of devotion to the Virgin Mary in Brazil, located 180 kilometres from the Recollect seminary. From the shrine, he sent a message of peace and of mutual prayer to his parish of Pauiní.
And what do you think about this?
